Do you think you know what vikings ate?

Spoiler: you’re completely wrong.

Between two battle scenes and a few horns of mead, we often imagine vikings as loud carnivores, tearing into meat with their bare hands.

Spoiler: that’s wrong.

Their diet was far more subtle, varied… and surprisingly modern.

Welcome to the table, 9th-century style.

🌾 Everyday food… far from the clichés

Contrary to popular belief, vikings didn’t eat meat at every meal. Their diet relied mainly on simple, local ingredients… and was surprisingly balanced.

👉 A cuisine shaped by the seasons, natural resources, and sheer resourcefulness.

🔎 The foundations of the viking diet

🪵 Cereals, the true star of the plate

Barley, rye, oats: these cereals were everywhere.
They were eaten in the form of:

– flatbreads
– porridges (grau, grød)
– thick pancakes

➡️ Bread was quite literally the foundation of everything.

🧀 Dairy products: the Nordic everyday staple

Vikings consumed a lot of:

– milk (cow or goat)
– butter
– cheese
– buttermilk
– skyr (yes, just like today 👀)

➡️ A key source of protein and fat.

🥩 Meat… but not how you imagine it

Yes, they ate meat — but not every day.

– Livestock: beef, pork, lamb, poultry
– Hunting: deer, elk, hare, wild birds
– Occasionally: bear (depending on the region)

➡️ Meat was valuable and often preserved (dried, smoked).

🐟 Fish: the real MVP of the viking diet

This is where it gets essential.

– herring
– salmon
– cod
– pike
– eel

➡️ Whether from the sea or rivers, fish was everywhere.

And sometimes… seals or even whales.

🥕 Vegetables, fruits, and wild plants

Less glamorous, but essential:

– turnips, carrots, cabbage
– peas, beans
– onions, leeks
– wild plants (like nettle)

On the sweeter side:

– apples
– berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
– hazelnuts

➡️ A much more plant-based diet than you might think.

🍯 Seasonings and drinks

No refined sugar — only honey.

– aromatic herbs
– medicinal plants
– sometimes poppy

As for drinks:

– beer (very common)
– mead
– milk and buttermilk
– imported wine (a luxury product)

🍲 How were their meals organized?

Two main meals:

– Morning (dagmál): porridge, bread, dried fruits
– Evening (náttmál): slow-cooked stews (meat or fish + vegetables)

➡️ The evening meal could simmer… for several days in the same pot.

Yes, literally a “one pot” viking-style.

🧠 Did you know?

👉 Vikings almost never ate alone. Meals were social, political… and sometimes even strategic.
